Colorado River Trip Troop 649 - October 2014
Rescued by Yuma Marines
It was a great weekend for taking the canoes down the Colorado river. The scouts headed out early Saturday morning on the river. There were 28 scouts and 4 adults. At 5:14pm a call was made to the Sheriffs department since the scouts didn't arrive to their destination yet and they were losing daylight. Search & Rescue were called as well. Yuma Marines sent out a team in a helicopter to find the scouts. The Sheriffs department was on boat. The scouts veered off the river, due to obstructed vision by reeds down the winding waterway. Once the Search & Rescue spotted the canoes, they sent a marine to make sure all boys and adults were safe. Once that was done; they dropped sticks that glowed in the water so they boys could canoe back in the dark. The Sheriff's department escorted the boys to there final destination. All boys were never in any danger and will remember this trip the rest of their lives. And, yes these boys were the first to sign up on the next canoe trip!!!
